| Born in San Jose, California in 1954, John Comito was first introduced to photography by his father. John’s father helped foster his interest with the purchase of a SLR Petri for $35. Once he had a camera, John would then sneak into a high school photography class with a friend and use the darkroom. The next year when he officially enrolled in the class, his instructor said, “So you are going to make it official this year.” John continued his education in photography and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Photography in 1984. To help pay off his school loans, John joined the Utah National Guard and there served as a photographer in the Special Forces for over 16 years. The experience allowed him to continue to expand his love of the art and exposure to new subjects. In 2002, John was sent to Afghanistan and assigned to use his photographic skills in documenting and writing for the US sponsored Afghan National Newspaper. He later spent a year in Iraq, recording images of his deployment for his personal use. John was active in the photography community in Utah, serving as the President and Vice President of the Photographic Print Society in Salt Lake City. John has shown his work extensively in Utah and more recently Texas. John''s work can be found in private and corporate collections in the States. One of John’s other loves has been the martial arts. He has competed on a national and international level winning numerous awards. His study in the martial arts and combat experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, have led him to seek a more peaceful means of life in a violent prone world, by sharing his insights with others. While John makes his living as a police officer in Texas (the family seems to want to eat regularly), he spends much of his personal time and resources on photography. He has two grown daughters and a son, along with 8 grandchildren, and lives with his wife Linda (“a fine judge of good photography”) and two dogs, Brutus and Fang, in Wylie, Texas. |
